Egyptian Politics from the 10 year old

I try to shield the Lego Boy from most current events stories because most of it is horrible and inappropriate for him to listen to.  But you can't turn around these days without reading or hearing the latest news about the chaos that is reigning in Cairo and the rest of Egypt.

We were outside in the backyard enjoying the lingering days of summer holidays; I was reading the paper with yet another headline about the goings-on in Egypt, when Lego Boy, reading the headline on the front page, asked again why they were fighting there.  For a few days prior I had fobbed him off with some deliberately vague answer like I don't know and It's complicated but he's the type of kid who will pester the life out of you  keep asking until he gets an answer that satisfies his curiosity.  So how to explain this issue in terms a 10 year old sensitive boy would understand.

Him: Why are they fighting in Egypt?

Me:  The army took away their president and some people are angry about it and so are protesting. The army isn't pleased about the protests.

Him: Why did the army take the president away?

Me:  They didn't think he was doing a very good job even though the people had elected him.

Him:  How come the army gets to decide who is the president?

Out of the mouths of babes.
