Moose.
I know this, LegoBoy knows this, everyone I talk to knows this.
Everyone, that is, except LB's teacher. He wrote "moose" as the plural for "moose" on his homework sheet and got it marked wrong. Miss Illiterate added an "s" to the word now making the plural of "moose" "mooses". Mooses. I had to look closely at her correction to make sure I was seeing things properly, that it wasn't just a little squiggle. Sadly, I was.
I've had this issue before. I shouldn't have this issue. You trust when you send your kids to school that the teachers are going to know more than the kids. And plural nouns is the easy stuff. What happens when they get to multiplying fractions or other complicated subjects?
So how do I handle this? I don't want to be that parent who goes storming into the office at the drop of a hat but I can't let something like that go unremarked upon. I wrote a little note on the bottom of the homework page telling Miss Illiterate that the plural of moose is in fact moose. It wasn't bitchy or mean but just a subtle note letting her know that I am paying attention.
But it angers me that I should have to pay such close attention.

Oh dear! That's nearly as good as Dan Quayle's spelling of potato! Not sure how you can get round that one .... but good luck :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely with you on this. Origami Boy's teacher, and, in fact, half the teachers in the school say "haitch" instead of aitch. This makes my BLOOD BOIL, but one of them is also a good friend. My teacher mother used to correct children in her class when they did it a few decades ago, but it seems it's now not politically correct to do so. It's wrong! Good on you for letting the teacher know. Any response from her yet???
