RSVP

What does this mean?

Literally, it is short form for a lovely French phrase - Respondez, s'il vous plait.

In English it means, Please reply.

It doesn't mean reply if you can be arsed.

It doesn't mean ignore it altogether.

It doesn't mean reply only if you're coming.

It doesn't mean reply only if you're not coming.

It means Please reply.  Period.

Lego Boy is having his birthday party tomorrow and I have heard from 3 kids out of a guest list of 10.  30% response rate.  That's bullshit.

Have we lost all our manners?  Are we all so busy that we can't pick up the phone for a sixty second conversation?  "Hi, this is Johnny's mum.  He'd love to come to Lego Boy's party.  We'll see you then.  Bye".  That wouldn't even take a minute to say.  I even left my email address so people wouldn't even have to talk to me if they didn't want to.  Even if your kid doesn't want to come to the party, at least pick up the f*cking phone and lie to me.

As it stands now, I have no idea how many kids are coming.  I have prepared for them all showing up, of course - enough loot bags for everybody, enough cake and hot dogs but it's driving me nuts.

Would it be inappropriate to be drinking a gin and tonic as the guests arrived?

  1. One of my pet hates. I seem to be the only person who rings back immediately if there's a message on the answer machine. I'll invite one of Origami Boy's friends round for Saturday on a Wednesday in a highly organised fashion, only to get a negative response on Friday night when it's too late to arrange anything else. Grrrrrrrrr. I hope the party goes okay. Just make enough food for four and starve any children of the non-responsive parents. Great!
