Lego Boy is in Grade 8 and goes to the local senior public school, grades 6 to 8. We live too far away for him to come home for lunch and with the stupid balanced school day, he only gets 40 minutes for lunch anyway, 20 minutes to eat and 20 minutes outside.
For the last 2 years, he has been eating lunch in a classroom which has been made available to kids who don't want to go to the caf. The school social worker (the fact that his school has a permanent on-site social worker is a whole different post) supervises this room. I didn't say too much about him using this room but I thought he should go to the caf sometimes anyway just to meet some new kids and join in a bit with the activities. Maybe school would be a bit more enjoyable if he was more involved.
For a few weeks in September he was eating lunch in the cafeteria, which is really just the old gym with some tables and benches set up. This year, the kids were assigned a particular bench with the rest of their class. At last, I thought, he was confident to go to the caf. and eat with his class-mates. That was very short lived.
A couple of days ago, I asked him who he ate with in the caf. I didn't eat in the caf., came the answer. Why not, I asked. I launched into my spiel about joining in, getting to know your class-mates, having a laugh. So why not, I asked again.
"It smells weird.
It's too loud.
And people throw stuff"
Well, you can't really argue with that.
