Halloween Treat Fail

Who could possibly screw up rice krispie squares?

Oh,oh,oh, I can.

But Hen, you ask, how, how could you possibly screw up rice krispie squares?  They must be the easiest thing in the world to make.

I know, but I can and I did in 4 Easy Steps.

Step 1 - When you check your cupboard on the day Lego Boy asks you to make them for his party at school, assume the bag of marshmallows you see stuck waaaay up on the top shelf is enough to make the treats.  On baking day, realize that this bag only has half the required number of marshmallows and scrounge around for more that, joy of joys, you find.  Ignore the sensation that these new found marshmallows seem rather hard to the touch. Toss them all into the pot and ignore the loud thump that the rock hard ones makes as they land.

Step 2 - Turn the heat up too high, in order to melt them quickly because you'd rather not be making them in the first place and you've got 500 other things to do, and start to burn them.  Rescue them just in time and convince yourself that the  brownness will add extra flavour, sort of like roasted-over-the-campfire  marshmallows. Realize that stale marshmallows do not really melt all that well.

Step 3 -   Dump in your 6 cups of cereal, pleased with yourself that you actually had some cereal in the cupboard.  Try not to be too concerned that the cereal might be a little stale.  Struggle to mix the cereal into the less than adequate amount of gooey stuff and dump the whole mess out and again struggle to stretch it to fill the 9x13  pan.  When cooled, cut into squares and ignore the little bits of cereal that did not get coated with the goo and are bone dry.

Step 4 - Hope that the kids will be too jacked up on high-fructose corn syrup from their other party treats to notice how crappy your rice krispie squares taste.

See, it's not that hard to screw up rice krispie treats.
